What is 10DLC?
10DLC stands for 10-digit long code. It is a 10-digit local number used by businesses to send and receive text messages. 10DLC was created to support Application-to-Person (A2P) for businesses to text from Internet connected devices.
To use 10DLC, businesses must register and comply with regulations such as the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). 10DLC is governed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA).
What is A2P?
Application-to-person messaging. It used to only apply to automated messaging sent by Short Codes or Toll Free long codes but now business texting looks similar to personal texting so the definition was updated. It now includes any 10 digit local number that can support texting.
Why is there 10DLC?
Mobile carriers implemented 10DLC registration to prevent bad actors from posing as legitimate businesses and spamming or scamming contacts who never asked to be texted.
The goal of 10DLC registration is to ensure consumers get messages they actually want, that they are not harmed by bad actors, and to keep texting a clean and effective channel for business communications.
What is the Campaign Registry?
The Campaign Registry (TCR) administers the registration of brands and campaigns for 10DLC. The TCR verifies your business and campaign use case.
AMI will handle the interactions with the TCR on your behalf.
What are Brands?
A 10DLC Brand is the business entity that is sending/receiving the text messages. Generally a business will only need to register a single brand with their business information. A single brand can have multiple campaigns associated to it.
What are Campaigns?
A 10DLC Campaign is what you will be texting. A campaign covers the purpose, use cases, sample messages, opt-in, opt-out and help options.
What is a Direct Connect Aggregator (DCA)?
DCAs act as intermediaries between businesses (or brands) and mobile carriers
- DCAs are responsible for ensuring that messages sent via 10DLC comply with CTIA regulations and carrier requirements before they reach the intended recipients.
- DCAs also vet and approve 10DLC campaigns for compliance.
Do I need to do 10DLC registration?
Yes. All of AMI's messaging traffic is considered Application-to-Person (A2P) and requires 10DLC registration in order to send messages.
What is the process for 10DLC registration?
- Register your Brand
- Register your campaign
- Await Vetting
- Assign Numbers to campaign
